This funny and delightful Tony-award winning musical is divided into two very different acts. Act One is traditional: Cinderella goes to the ball and captures the heart of the prince, Jack climbs the beanstalk and slays the giant, Little Red Riding Hood is saved from the wolf, and Rapunzel escapes her lonely tower. Meanwhile the Baker and his wife, on a quest to break the curse they are under, weave their way through the storybook characters to collect a cow as white as milk, a cape as red as blood, a slipper as pure as gold, and hair as yellow as corn. As intermission approaches, all wishes have been granted and happily ever after is at hand. Act Two, however, deals with what happens after happily ever after – the consequences that traditional fairy tales ignore and the responsibilities that come with getting what you want. Together both acts create an unforgettable show that brings new meaning to the stories we tell our children.

Present day Hamburg: a tortured and near-dead half-Chechen, half-Russian man on the run arrives in the city's Islamic community desperate for help and looking to recover his late Russian father's ill-gotten fortune. Nothing about him seems to add up; is he a victim, thief or, worse still, an extremist intent on destruction? Drawn into this web of intrigue is a British banker and a young female lawyer, determined to defend the defenseless. All the while, they are being watched by the brilliant, roguish chief of a covert German spy unit, who fights to put the pieces together as the clock ticks.
